Why love affairs are never forgotten

To love is to receive a glimpse of heaven." Karen Sunde

It's been said that you never forget your first love, but, as a matter of fact, you never forget any true love affair.

A love affair is a strong, positive emotion of affection and regard shared by two people, usually a male and a female, which extends over a period of time. Whether an affair lasts only a few weeks or extends over several months or years, intense feelings are involved.

During the affair, each participant focuses fervent attention on the beloved. Every detail about their lives, their preferences and interests, their birthdays, their jobs, their close family members, becomes vitally important. When they are not together, each lover reviews and processes all these fascinating tidbits of information and formulates even more questions.

No laboratory specimens are studied as minutely and carefully as two people, deeply in love, examine every aspect of each others' existence.

Every moment spent together has a special magic. A coffee at Tim Horton's, a walk on the beach, a concert in the park are all etched in memory, to be replayed over and over during periods of separation. Is it any wonder that these unparalleled, joyful experiences, intertwined as they are with intense emotions, are virtually unforgettable?

As one ages, he or she will forget many things such as acquaintances, addresses and names. Even words that were always on the tip of the tongue during one's younger days, sometimes take a while to retrieve. However, those experiences of love remain evergreen in memory. Why?

Perfect Love is our source and our intended destiny. Humans are hard-wired to give and receive love.

Theologians tell us that God is Love. Humans were created by God. We are set on earth with an innate inclination to love Him, however we perceive Him, and our fellow humans. By so doing, we will arrive successfully at our intended destiny, eternal happiness in heaven, in the presence of God, who is Perfect Love.

When we experience true love on earth, it is a foretaste of heaven. It is not perfect, because humans are not perfect. Sooner or later, it will fade, or change, or even die. Fortunate lovers become friends and companions who may in fact, journey through life together. Others will eventually part.

In time, any unhappiness and bitter memories connected to past love affairs will fade, but the joyous memories are permanently engraved in the mind. When other data, such as names attached to familiar faces, have disappeared around shadowy corners in the memory bank, recollections of past love affairs will unfailingly bring a smile to wrinkled faces.

Love is our source and our destiny. True loves along the journey from one point to the other are significant checkpoints. They will never be forgotten.
